Stimuli responsive polymers for biomedical applications.
Polymers that can respond to external stimuli are of great interest in medicine, especially as controlled drug release vehicles. In this critical review, we consider the types of stimulus response used in therapeutic applications and the main classes of responsive materials developed to date. Particular emphasis is placed on the wide-ranging possibilities for the biomedical use of these polymer...
متن کاملStimuli-responsive polymers and their applications
Responsive polymer-based materials are capable of altering their chemical and/or physical properties upon exposure to external stimuli. These materials have been intensively studied over the years for a diverse range of applications, e.g., for on-demand drug delivery, tissue generation/repair, biosensing, smart coatings, and artificial muscles. Here, we review recent advances in the areas of se...
متن کاملStimuli-responsive polymers and their applications in drug delivery.
Interest in stimuli-responsive polymers is steadily gaining increasing momentum especially in the fields of controlled and self-regulated drug delivery. Delivery systems based on these polymers are developed to closely resemble the normal physiological process of the diseased state ensuring optimum drug release according to the physiological need. Also termed 'environmental-sensitive' or 'smart...
متن کاملSurface modification of mammalian cells with stimuli-responsive polymers.
In order to introduce alternative functions into mammalian cells and control them under ambient conditions, poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) was immobilized on the cell surface. Cellular aggregation could be regulated by temperature change. In addition, separation of PNIPAM-conjugated glycoproteins was successfully performed.
متن کاملCoaxial nanotubes of stimuli responsive polymers with tunable release kinetics.
Stimuli responsive polymeric (SRP) nanotubes have great potential as nanocarriers of macromolecules due to their large surface areas and release mechanisms that can be activated externally. In this work, we demonstrate vapor phase synthesis of coaxial nanotubes with layers of different SRP polymers for improved release kinetics. Temperature responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm), pH r...
